Can Dameto de la Quartera

Description

The house was built in the Gothic style. The façade features pointed arches and the remains of mullioned windows separated by a column, and a gargoyle that shows where the old building ended. A further floor with eaves was added in the 18th century. The inner courtyard still maintains the late Gothic octagonal column, which was restored in the 17th century. However, the original lonja (commodities exchange) was removed during the refurbishment carried out during the 19th century and replaced by a covered corridor.

History

This house was owned by the Vallespir family from Inca. According to the amended electoral roll for 1864 the house was situated on plot number 8 and was owned by Mr. Nicolau Dameto y Puigdorfila, "landowner" whose estate was worth 23,021 Mallorcan pounds (Municipal Archive of Palma, 1060). In the year 1990, the house was owned by Nicolau Dameto y Squella.

Other data of interest In the 18th century this building was sold to the Dameto family. From this point in time onwards, the house would be known as Can Dameto. Later on however, "de la Quartera" would be added to the name, in reference to the neighbouring square.
