Ca'n Ribas de Pina

Description

The façade has a rounded doorway. Above it, we find a balcony that shows the remains of medieval windows with a vertical column between the window panes. The porch shows octagonal pillars and a major corbel. The courtyard has an irregular floor that has adapted to the available space. The entrance leads to the courtyard by means of a lowered arch and half-columns on the sides that are decorated with ionic capitals. The courtyard is evenly cobbled and the staircase on its right hand side has a handrail with a flat iron balustrade. A wooden corbel acts as staircase protection. At the back end of the courtyard we find a wall with a huge lowered arch, closed by a wooden barrier, as well as a gallery with a balustrade that divides the courtyard and the garden.

Historical Reference

The house has a Gothic foundation but was rebuilt by Miquel Joan Net Serralta around the year 1687. In the year 1718 Miquel Ribas de Pina Ferrà bought the house from the Serralta family, who had been the owners since the XVIth century. A few years later, towards the year 1754, Gabriel Ribes de Pina Sanxo - son of the above mentioned buyer - became the new owner of the house. A number of reforms were carried out, within the scope of which a porch with small wooden pillars and eaves were added to the building, all Gothic windows on the façade were walled and the courtyard was refurbished following the baroque style. Apparently, the courtyard had been commonly shared with the neighbouring house called Can Dameto de la Quartera. The surname was made famous by several well-known characters, such as Gabriel Marià Ribes de Pina, illustrious presbyterian of the XIXth century. He had been known for having founded, together with his sister, the religious order of the "Hijas de la Misericordia" (Daughters of Mercy). The priest donated part of the house to the community. The congregation had access to the house through an entrance situated on the current Plaza Quadrado.

According to the "amended electoral list" of the year 1864, the house was located on block numer 8 and owned by Mr. Miquel Ribas de Pina Gallard "yeoman", with a quota of 11,575 pounds (AMP, 1060). The house is currently owned by the Oliver Moragues family, heirs of the Ribas de Pina family.
