Santa Eulalia

Santa Eulalia

The access to the church is from Plaça de Santa Eulalia, one of the oldest squares in the city.
As the previous old mosque was reconverted into a church, the church became also one of the first parishes in Palma,
After the Catalan conquest (1229), Palma was divided in four parishes, Santa Eulalia being one of them. Built on the old mosque at the end of XIIIth century, the works and interventions were prolonged till the XVIIth century.

The result is the unique, three-nave church located in Palma - apart from La Seu. Each epoch has contributed with its own special features to the Church. Its firmness and austerity in the ornamentation are remarkable. Besides its religious use for the parishioners, it was also a place for meetings and ceremonies for the craftsmen of the guilds.
Therefore it was a place for the unity of noble classes and the villagers. Architecturally, it has a basilica ground plant with transept, with a polygonal presbytery shaped with a groined vault ceiling.
At the end of the XIXth century the remodelling mainly affected the façade. The new one mixes different styles.
